Empowering Teens for Symptom-Free Periods

Updated: Jul 9, 2023

The teenage phase poses unique changes and challenges for young girls. As they embark on a journey of newfound pressure from social life, some degree of independence (wanted or not), increased responsibilities at school and also at home, and surging hormones bringing unknown changes, it's natural for them to experience a roller coaster of emotions.

A couple years ago, the menstrual cycle was declared the “fifth vital sign” of health for teenage girls by the American Committee of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). Read the complete study here

Hormonal fluctuations, like the sudden surge of estrogen, can lead to acne and sudden emotional volatily. However, it's essential to remember that adolescence doesn't have to be a constant struggle. In this post, we'll provide you with 8 valuable insights on how to support your daughter's well-being, enabling her to feel better now and paving the way for a future of symptom-free periods. It's a simple yet precious gift that will have long-lasting effects!

1- Embracing Hormonal Changes:

By understanding and acknowledging the hormonal changes your daughter is going through, you can offer her much-needed support. Emphasize that these fluctuations are a normal part of development and help her navigate this transformative phase with patience and understanding. Young girls and their caretakers frequently have difficulty assessing what constitutes normal menstrual cycles or patterns of bleeding. If you are not quite sure about the hormonal changes and how the impact the mood, digestion, brain and health in general, I advise you to register to the online course: “Empowering Your Teenage Daughter: A Guide to Navigating Hormonal Changes and Achieving Symptom-Free Periods”.

2- Promoting Self-Care Practices:

Encourage your daughter to prioritize self-care practices that contribute to hormonal balance. For example, embrace a nourishing diet, incorporating wholesome foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, good fats and lean proteins. Hydration is also crucial, as it aids in regulating hormone levels and reducing discomfort during periods. A full list of reach foods to consume on every phase of the monthly cycle can be found on this guide.

3- Managing Emotional Well-being:

Teach your daughter effective strategies for managing her emotional well-being. Encourage her to engage in activities that promote relaxation and reduce stress. Discover and embrace her hobbies, or another way is spending time in nature. These practices can help stabilize emotions and foster a sense of calm. There are some days during the cycle where we tend to be more sensitive than others. Have a look at the latest video on this topic on our YouTube channel

4- Optimal Menstrual Hygiene:

Guide your daughter in maintaining optimal menstrual hygiene practices, ensuring her comfort and confidence during her periods. Educate her about various menstrual products available and assist her in finding the most suitable option. Emphasize the importance of regular changing, proper hygiene, and cleanliness to prevent any potential issues.

is described on our guide, make sure you donwload it and discover which toxic products you should avoid from your choices.

5- Seeking Expert Advice:

If your daughter experiences severe menstrual symptoms or irregularities, consider seeking guidance from healthcare professionals. They can provide valuable insights and offer appropriate medical interventions, if necessary. Consulting a healthcare provider will ensure your daughter's well-being and provide personalized care when needed. Feel free to book an online consultation to discuss your concerns and discover if a visit to the ginecologist is needed and for advise on alternative ways to discuss with your health practicioner. Identification of abnormal menstrual patterns in adolescence may improve early identification of potential health concerns for adulthood.

6- Fostering Open Communication:

Create a safe and non-judgmental space for your daughter to express her concerns and ask questions. Encourage open and honest conversations about menstruation, hormones, contraception alternatives and sex education. By nurturing a supportive dialogue, you can empower your daughter to take control of her hormonal health and foster a sense of self-assurance. Register to one of our in person workshops where we discuss this topics, this will open the door to start the conversation with your daughter, and you will get inspired with information you may have not learned before. Check our locations and upcoming workshops

7- Lead by example:

Actions speaks laughter than words! Be a role model for your daughter when it comes to menstrual health. Your daughter will learn a lot by observing your actions rather than just listening to words. Additionally, if you haven't already discussed your hormonal challenges, open up to her and let her know about your own journey towards hormonal recovery. Just like the airplane safety instructions, remember to "help yourself before you help others."

Perhaps you can embark together in a learning phase by implementing healthy habits to harmonise your hormonal cycle. Our consultation services are available for menstruators of all ages, make sure you book a session if you struggle with hormonal imbalances.

8- Avoid the use of hormonal contraception as the initial approach for addressing menstrual issues

You may feel tempted to find a fast solution to your teen’s pain and complaints. The baby skin turning with acne, excessive and irregular bleeding, tears from excruciating cramps, and distressing premenstrual syndrome (PMS), within others may be the complains your teen may have. Most healthcare professionals tend to resort to prescribing birth control pills as a cure. However, this "treatment" merely conceals the underlying hormonal imbalances that cause these period problems instead of resolving them, and it turn to be a dis-advantage in the long run to the reproductive system and more.

While it may be tempting to rely on these medications to alleviate the problem, it is important to recognize that doing so can predispose your teen to a lifetime of adverse effects, including:

- Hair loss

- Depression

- Anxiety

- Decreased sexual desire

- Increased cancer risk, and even life-threatening blood clots.

Additionally, these pills can impede the normal functioning of her endocrine, metabolic, and immune systems, not to mention her future fertility.

Has your health practitioner warned you of these potential negative side effects?

Get well informed about the side effects and discuss it with your daughter. In doubt, book a session and let's look for alternatives depending on the complaints.

Dear adult:

While the teenage years may present challenges, your support can make a significant difference in your teen's well-being. By understanding and embracing hormonal changes, promoting self-care practices, managing emotions, maintaining menstrual hygiene, seeking expert advice when needed, and fostering open communication, you can empower your daughter to navigate the transformative teenage years with grace and confidence.
Remember, your guidance is a precious gift that will help her embrace a future of symptom-free periods and overall hormonal harmony.
